Thanks Jenn! I knew they had a name, nor have I thought about them as landmarks for navigation. That is fascinating.
The word I was thinking was Cairn... and upon looking at that wiki I realized they are also for burials (makes sense), and several other reasons as well...https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cairn.
I wonder if it says something about me, that I only looked at them as artistic creations. :)
